Health Briefs TV Wonders Why Women Can Handle the Flu Better than Men

Women, by nature, are stronger than men when it comes to handling illness better. They’re tougher and are the gender that takes care of their families. But this is just one reason why Health Briefs TV learns why women can handle the flu better than men.

The female body produces estrogen which in turn produces an enzyme which fights off infection.  Males do not produce this hormone which means their bodies are not equipped as well as women to fight off the flu virus. And then there are the other factors: women go to the doctor and get and take a prescription drug to kill the virus sooner. Their very make up is made to be the nurturer and therefore stronger than the males. Men tend to take to the bed longer and expect to be well taken care of when sick. Women spend less time in bed and do more when sick to keep the home running smoothly.  Men are not so good at accepting help, especially from medical professionals.

Health Briefs TV suggests men double up on vitamin C , drink plenty of fluids and get a decent amount of rest.  The flu season is expected to be bad this year even for those who get the flu shot. So ante up on the vitamins, sleep, hydrating liquids, eat healthy and get some moderate exercise. If flu symptoms crop up, go to the doctor and get a prescription to knock it out sooner.

Why Over Hydrating is a Killer from Health Briefs

(more than one of these per day is not a healthy way to hydrate)

As much as we encourage readers to stay hydrated in the late summer heat and humidly, we also suggest hydrating in healthy ways. Health Briefs explains why over hydrating can be a killer.

It is still terribly hot and humid outside and we still have to drink enough water to stave off thirst, dehydration and the possibility of fainting. But there is a limit for the amount of hydrating liquids our bodies can handle.

Over hydration occurs when we consume more fluids than the brain and body can take. Drinking large quantities of water in a short period of time can send the body’s balance of electrolytes off kilter, cause brain swelling, seizures, put the patient in a coma, or cause death.

One eight ounce glass or bottle of water per hour is a healthy way to stay hydrated both indoors and out. When we are very thirsty, such as after working outside, it is reasonable to want to gulp down more water than normal. But moderation is best. Health Briefs TV urges readers to be mindful of over hydration. Take it easy when in the heat and keep an eye on student athletes this year on the practice and playing field.

Health Briefs TV shares How to Beat Dehydration

Summer inevitably brings high heat and the possibility to become dehydrated. Luckily, there are some easy ways to tell if you are and easy ways to prevent it. Health Briefs shares what these are.

If you are exercising or working outdoors in the sun, you may experience some of these symptoms of dehydration:

A headache – Sweating can cause the body to lose valuable salt and potassium. Salt loss causes a change in the chemistry in blood. Your brain is super sensitive to this and a headache starts. The more water the body loses, the more the blood volume lowers which causes a drop in oxygen to the brain. So, drink plenty of water when working outside.

Urine is yellowish – This basically means your urine is over-concentrated with waste. Drink plenty of water to fully flush out the waste.

Constipation – Sure, there are other factors which can cause constipation. However, a lack of water in the body can block things up. Water helps waste move through the colon and out of the body efficiently. So, drink up and things will loosen up.

There are some tasty ways to stay hydrated over the summer months. Health Briefs suggests enjoying some homemade lemonade, a glass of iced sport drink (the potassium helps prevent leg cramps too), and of course, plenty of water. Make it taste better with a squeeze of lemon or lime, cucumber slices and some strawberries or a sprig of fresh mint. Beat hydration this summer and all year round.
