Health Briefs TV Celebrates National Public Health Week

The first full week of April is designated National PublicHealth Week in the United States. Health Briefs TV celebrates this national initiative to help promote healthy lives for everyone.

Throughout every state and every county in the state, no two health departments are the same. Each one has its own unique community and population striving to serve through program and services tailored to its residents, and often with dwindling funds. The people and community will change over the years, and as it does, the Health Departments have to change too. Here’s a look, nationally, at what this week is all about:

  • Building healthy communities by committing funds to healthier schools, homes, parks, and community centers.
  • Providing quality healthcare no matter the age, race, sex, income level of the resident.
  • Ensuring that schools and other facilities provide healthy meals and exercise programs.
  • Finding and implementing ways to curtail stress.
  •

The Health Briefs TV show also notes some of the top public health concerns Americans may have to contend with: obesity and diabetes, high blood pressure, Zika infection, climate change and how it affects public health, community environmental challenges and how to combat them, and keeping seniors healthy and mobile, and ensuring every person in the United States has clean, safe drinking water. Join us as we share news about National Public Health Week.

Health Briefs TV and the Ten Most Healthy States in the U.S.

The Healthiest State in the U.S.

Where we live plays a large part in how healthy we are. Health Briefs TV takes a look at the ten healthiest U.S. states, as rated by United Healthcare Foundation, and how they made it to the top of the chart.

Nebraska has a low rate of drug deaths, a high rate of high school grads, a good rate of child immunizations. Although it is 10th on the list, the western state has a high rate of binge drinking and large gap in health status by education level.

North Dakota is ninth on the list due to its low rate of drug-related deaths, high immunization rate for teens and lower rate of low birth weight.

Colorado is one of those states with an abundance of outdoor activities which is why it is in eighth place. The state has lower numbers of obesity and diabetes and the lowest in the country.

New Hampshire has a high rate of active residents, a low rate of infectious diseases, and low infant mortality rates, which is why it is seventh on the list.

Minnesota may be a terribly close place in the winter but it came in sixth place for the lowest obesity and diabetes rates in the nation, as well as having a low rate of drug deaths.

Utah is fifth. This state has a low number of people who smoke, 2nd lowest diabetes rates in the country, and a low percentage of children in poverty.

Connecticut is fourth because the state has a low prevalence of smoking,  a high immunization rate among children, and a low occupational fatalities rate.

Massachusetts is third as it most noted by researchers of having more residents with health insurance than other states.

Vermont is one of the healthiest states in the U.S. High school graduations are up, children living in poverty is down, violent crimes and binge drinking rates are also down.

Hawaii is the healthiest state in the U.S. Obesity, cancer and preventable hospitalization rates are all down. The percentage of smokers hs gone down by 21% in the last year. Health Briefs TV applauds each of these states for their great work in helping residents achieve overall health and wellness.

Health Briefs TV on the Top Five Healthiest Counties in the U.S.

U.S. News commissioned a set of rankings for the healthiest counties in the U.S. with assistance from the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, which evaluates health data for the U.S. population as part of its County Health Rankings and Roadmaps program, a collaboration with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Below, Health Briefs lists the top five healthiest counties in the country.

As counties across the nation take a break from school, the nutritional needs of school age children will be considered. A part of this is to make sure that children have the right food in their bellies to help them stay awake and alert. The counties below top the list as those taking active steps to ensure America’s children are getting what they need:

  1. Marin County, CA
  2. Norfolk County, VA
  3. Hunterdon County, NJ
  4. Chittenden County, VT
  5. Nassau County, NY

America’s 50 Healthiest Counties for Kids represents a national assessment on the health and environmental factors which affect the well-being of children younger than 18. Some of the results for the top five were: few lower birth rates, fewer deaths from injuries, fewer teen births and fewer children in poverty. Some counties utilize food pantries to deliver healthy snacks to schools located in lower income areas. To see how your home county is ranked, click here.

Health Briefs believes healthy kids are kids that will learn better in school.
