Health Briefs TV Shares Green Ideas for Better Health

Shop at local farmers markets for produce

One of the easiest ways to celebrate Earth Day is make a healthy change or two for yourself and family.

Health Briefs TV believes that making personal health a top priority is one of the best ways to make a positive change in lifestyle. As the country honors and participates in the 45th celebration of Earth Day on April 22, we want to share a few green ideas for better health with readers.

Choose organic meat, chicken and fish at the store. There are no antibiotics in them. Animals are fed a more natural diet.

Visit local farmers markets for produce of the highest and most Earth-friendly quality. It may cost a tad more than store bought, but it tastes better and is healthier to consume.

Invest in over the faucet water filters. They are inexpensive to purchase as are the replaceable filters. One water filter saves the Earth from thousands of plastic bottles.

Avoid wasting food not used. If a can is opened to gain a small amount for cooking, put the remaining contents in a reusable plastic container and freeze them. Don’t cover the can or bottle and put back in the fridge to get moldy.

The Health Briefs TV show also recommends filling up the freezer with seasonal produce not consumed yet. No vitamins or nutrients are lost when food is frozen. It also makes using those colorful fruits and veggies out of season a whole lot nicer.

Choose Earth-friendly cleaning products and paper goods for the home.

Earth Day 2015 is a great day to make positive healthy choices in your life. Choose one or more and be on the way to a greener and healthier living.

Health Briefs TV Warns Readers about E-Cigarette Dangers

Quitting smoking is one of the most difficult things to do. Breaking that nicotine habit is hell. There is no other way to describe it. Today, there are nicotine patches, nicotine lozenges and e-cigarettes to help people who want to quit smoking. As many could guess, some of these helpers are not all that good for you.  Health Briefs looks at the dangers of e-cigarettes.

Electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes are a popular option for people who are trying to quit smoking. Shaped like a long cigarette, the item can be loaded with flavored vapors and a heavy dose of nicotine. Newer models of the e-cig allow the user to adjust the level of nicotine they get. But along with that comes a higher amount of formaldehyde, which is a probable human carcinogen. Health Briefs TV notes that cigarettes also contain formaldehyde. Researchers found that the higher the voltage chosen on the e-cigarette, the higher amount of formaldehyde. They also note that people who vaped three milliliters of e-liquid per day would inhale 14.4 milligrams of formaldehyde. This can possibility increase the risk of cancer up to 15 times.

While there are many options today to help the smoker kick the nicotine habit, our best suggestion is to ask a doctor. Most of the products on store shelves are expensive. But quitting sure beats the high cost of healthcare that a cancer diagnoses will eventually bring.

Health Briefs TV on the Unknown Effects of Obesity

Most people know that obesity can cause heart trouble and diabetes. But it can also bring trouble for some of our other body organs too. Health Briefs TV offers information.

An overweight or obese person will often complain about knee pain. Extra weight on knees, hips and feet is common and can be avoided by participating in a weight loss program or consulting with a doctor about weight loss surgery. Overweight people can also suffer from migraines more than those who are not. In a recent study, people who were obese complained of having 14 migraines per month compared to those with a healthy weight. A cancer diagnosis can also be a negative outcome from being obese. Kidney, gallbladder, liver, colon and uterine cancer diagnoses were found with those who are overweight than those who were not. Ten percent were attributed to being overweight in a study conducted by The Lancet.

The Health Briefs TV show learns that obesity affects fertility. Women who are obese had a harder time becoming pregnant. They can also experience premature delivery of infants. Sleep disorders also affect people who are overweight and obese. When extra weight rests on the heart or lungs it affects the organs’ ability to function properly and can cause sleep troubles. Extra fat around the neck affects the soft tissues of the nose and can cause apnea. Along with all of these effects there are also the social effects of being obese which can range from family shame to being mistreated in a healthcare professional’s office which can cause depression. The best options for overweight and obese people are to seek the advice of a trusted doctor to find the best weight loss program. Because the unknown effects of obesity are just as harmful as the known ones.

Health Briefs TV Explains Why Women Live Longer than Men

Women don't take risks like this so they live longer

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that a girl born in 2012 should expect to live to be 81 years old while boys born that same year will live to age 76.  In other words, girls could live five more years than boys. Health Briefs TV takes a look at the reasons why and asks readers for their thoughts.

Females are stronger in the womb than boys since there are fewer of them born. Males are more likely to succumb to in utero infections than females. They also develop more slowly than girls in the womb and struggle more if born prematurely.

Unintentional injuries are the third leading cause of death in males. The front lobe of the brain which deals with responsibility and risk calculation develops much slower in males than females.

Health Briefs TV learns that heart disease is the leading killer for both men and women, but men are more likely to develop it earlier. Menopause protects women from developing it because the mid to late life condition churns out estrogen which keeps arteries strong and flexible.

Women also take better care of their health than men. Men tend to deny health problems and battle through them without seeing a doctor.

We want to know what you think. Do you know any women who outlived the men in their lives? What factors do you think led to their longer life?
